Frequently Asked Questions for your Newborn Photographer - Everything You Need to Know Before Your Session

As a newborn photographer, I understand how important these early moments are for you and your family. Your baby’s first few weeks of life are full of precious memories that deserve to be captured beautifully. However, as a first-time parent or someone new to professional photography, you may have some questions about the process. To make your experience as smooth and enjoyable as possible, I’ve put together this list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) to address any concerns you may have about your upcoming newborn photography session.

1. When should I schedule my newborn photography session?

The best time to book your newborn photography session is during your pregnancy. This gives us plenty of time to secure a spot on the schedule. Ideally, newborn sessions take place when your baby is between 5-14 days old, as they are still very sleepy, which allows for those classic sleepy poses and curled-up shots. We put a tentative date on the calendar for a week after your due date. Once baby arrives, we schedule an exact date and time.

2. What should I bring to the newborn photography session?

We have everything in the studio for baby including diapers, wipes and burp cloths. Parents should bring a soft blanket for baby and a change of clothes for baby. It is also super important to bring a pacifier (even if baby doesn't usually take one!) to help with soothing while baby is being posed.

3. How long does the session take?

Newborn photography sessions typically last between 2-3 hours, allowing ample time for feeding, soothing, and diaper changes. Babies need breaks, so we work at their pace. It’s important to allow for plenty of flexibility, and we want to make sure your baby is comfortable at all times.

4. What happens if my baby is fussy or won’t sleep?

It’s completely normal for newborns to be a little fussy or have trouble falling asleep. As a newborn photographer, I’m experienced in handling babies and can work with them, whether they are awake or asleep. If your baby doesn’t sleep for part of the session, we’ll focus on capturing sweet moments of them awake and alert, showing off their beautiful eyes. If they do fall asleep, we’ll capture those classic sleepy poses as well!

5. Do you offer sibling and family photos?

Yes! While newborn photos are our main focus, I love incorporating siblings and family members into the session. It’s a beautiful way to capture the bond between your new baby and the rest of your family.

6. Can I request certain poses for my newborn?

Absolutely! I want to make sure you love the final photos, so feel free to let me know if you have any specific poses or ideas in mind. I specialize in a clean and classic style, focusing on simple, natural poses, but I am more than happy to accommodate any requests that align with my style. Just let me know in advance, and we’ll work together to create the perfect shots.

7. What if my baby is older than 14 days? Can I still book a session?

While newborn sessions are ideally held within the first 14 days of life, I can still photograph older babies, even up to 6 weeks old. The main difference is that older babies are more alert and may not sleep as deeply during the session, but we can still capture beautiful, natural images. We may focus more on awake, expressive shots and family portraits during these sessions.

8. How long will it take to receive my photos?

After your session, I’ll start editing your photos to ensure they reflect the timeless, clean style you’re looking for. Editing typically takes around 1-2 weeks, and I’ll send you an online gallery with your images. Once you’ve selected your favorites, you can choose from a variety of print products and digital files to preserve your memories.

9. Do you provide prints or albums?

Yes, I offer a range of high-quality print products, including albums, metal prints, and framed prints, which are perfect for displaying your newborn photos in your home. I’ll provide you with a selection of print options once you’ve reviewed your online gallery.

10. What should I wear for family photos?

For family portraits, I recommend coordinating outfits that are simple and timeless. Neutral colors like whites, creams, light grays, and soft pastels work best for a classic look. Avoid bright colors, bold patterns, or logos that might distract from the subjects. I can provide guidance on outfit choices when you book your session.

11. Can I schedule a milestone session after the newborn photos?

Definitely! Many families choose to book a milestone session to capture their baby’s growth during their first year, including moments like their first smile, sitting up, or their first birthday. Let me know if you’d like to schedule a session, and I’d be happy to guide you through the best times to book for those milestones.

Choosing a newborn photographer is an important decision, and I’m here to make sure your experience is seamless and enjoyable. If you have any additional questions or would like to discuss a potential session, don’t hesitate to reach out. I look forward to capturing the precious moments that you and your family will treasure forever.
