A Day in the Life of a Newborn Photographer: Behind the Scenes of a Newborn Photoshoot Day

A day as a newborn photographer is filled with excitement, calm, and joy, as I work to capture the perfect images of a family’s newest addition. Every photoshoot day starts with preparation and ends with a sense of accomplishment as I deliver beautiful memories that will be cherished forever. Here’s a peek behind the scenes at what my day looks like when I’m photographing newborns.

Before my clients arrive, I start my day by preparing the studio for the photoshoot. Firstly I put the heater on. This is to ensure the studio is at the perfect temperature. Newborns feel most comfortable in a warm space.

Next, I check the changing station, making sure it’s fully stocked with everything a baby might need: diapers, wipes, burp cloths, and anything else I might need to make sure the shoot goes smoothly. I want parents to feel at ease, knowing they don’t have to worry about anything during the session. I then refill the snacks and drinks. Re-fuel for Mom and Dad is so important.

Creating the Perfect Atmosphere

Once the studio is ready, I put on classical calming music to set a peaceful tone for the session. The soft, soothing melodies help both the baby and the parents relax, creating an atmosphere of tranquility and ease. This calming environment helps everyone feel comfortable, which is key to getting those natural, serene shots of the newborn.

As the parents arrive, I greet them with a warm smile and make them feel at home. I know that bringing a newborn in for a photoshoot can be overwhelming (as a mom to 3, trust me, I know!!) so I always take the time to walk them through the process, let them know what to expect, and assure them that everything will be handled with care and attention.

The Photoshoot: A Calm, Relaxing Experience

The photoshoot itself is designed to be calm, relaxing, and stress-free. I take my time with each shot, ensuring that the baby is comfortable and at ease throughout the session. Whether we’re doing posed newborn shots or candid shots, I make sure to work at a pace that’s comfortable for both the baby and the parents. It’s a low-pressure experience where the focus is on creating beautiful, timeless images.

In fact, I’ve even had parents take a nap on the couch during the shoot! The atmosphere is so relaxing that many parents use the opportunity to rest while I focus on their newborn. It’s wonderful to see families enjoy the process and take a break while I create stunning memories for them.

The End of the Session: A Fresh Start for the Next Family

After the session is complete, I make sure to thank the parents for trusting me with their precious baby and let them know when they can expect their final images. I usually will show parents the back of my camera after the session so they can get a sneak peak of some photos. The joy on their faces when they see their photos the best thing in the world. This is why I do what I do!

Once they’ve left, my day doesn’t end there. I take the time to clean the studio, making sure everything is ready for the next photoshoot. I sanitize the changing station, clean any props or blankets that were used, and prepare the studio for the next family. It’s important to me that each family feels welcomed and taken care of, and that means maintaining a clean, organized space for every session.

A day in the life of a newborn photographer is a mix of preparation, creativity, and hospitality. From setting up the studio to capturing timeless moments of a newborn’s first days, to welcoming parents into my space, every step is designed to make the photoshoot as enjoyable and stress-free as possible for families. I’m proud to offer a space where parents can relax, trust the process, and walk away with beautiful memories that will last a lifetime.
